Poltrona Frau - New York
The Poltrona Frau showroom, a collaboration with AMDL Circle and FROM Architecture, housed within a historic 1910 Landmark Building, boasting over 20,000 sqf of retail space spread across two levels.
The architectural challenges posed by the existing space were met with ingenious design solutions. With a significant elevation difference of approximately 5 feet between the storefront windows and the ground floor, and a disjointed connection to the basement level, our team introduced a series of platforms and raised floors. These elements seamlessly reconnect the exterior display windows with the interior space, while a new staircase and elevator enhance accessibility and flow.
The varying floor elevations serve a dual purpose, allowing for the creation of a versatile materials library that doubles as both a parapet and a wall, effectively delineating display areas from the design workshop. To enhance the ambiance, ceiling heights are meticulously controlled using a grid of track lights, which also function as drop ceilings. This design choice lends an intimate, residential feel to the showroom, enveloping visitors in a cozy embrace.
Upon arrival at the basement level via the staircase or elevator, guests are greeted by an interior garden bathed in natural light. Here, meticulous lighting design creates an illusion of natural illumination, casting a spotlight on adjacent furniture settings and enhancing the overall ambiance.
The basement level itself is characterized by two distinct display areas, separated by portal corridors that serve as primary access points. Exposed building systems and structural components are ingeniously incorporated into the design, providing a striking backdrop for furniture dioramas arranged as a succession of imaginary rooms. This layout invites the public to explore Poltrona Frau's diverse collections within a captivating and immersive environment.
